Corey Perez was born and raised in Miami, Florida. After receiving his B.A. in Biochemistry from Columbia in 2010, Corey began working as a joint research assistant under the supervision of Ruben Gonzalez and Virginia Cornish. He employed single-molecule fluorescence resonance energy transfer (smFRET) coupled with total internal reflection microscopy (TIRFM) to explore the complex dynamics of the ribosome recycling stage of translation. In the Crawford Lab, Corey seeks to enumerate the rules governing heterologous, biosynthetic small molecule production. To accomplish this, he is utilizing an array of synthetic biology techniques coupled with MS and NMR studies to characterize the biological alterations that lead to the upregulation of these small molecules.
