Hyun Bong Park carried out his doctoral research in Dr. Hak Cheol Kwon’s lab at the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) and received his doctoral degree from Prof. Kang Ro Lee at Sungkyunkwan (SKK) University in Korea. At KIST, Hyun Bong identified and characterized the structures of novel natural products isolated from microorganisms that naturally live in extreme environments. For the discovery of novel secondary metabolites, he mainly used microbial co-culturing techniques to stimulate bioactive small molecule production in the lab. Hyun Bong joined the lab during the Summer of 2013, and his work currently focuses on bioactive small molecule discovery from host-bacteria associations (bacteria and insect/human) with a special eye for new molecules synthesized by atypical orphan biosynthetic gene clusters.
